Yes. Today is the day. I’m so excited that Scribblers on the Roof has finally launched, just in time for the upcoming High Holy Days. Fitting no?
The impetus behind the site was truly one of those 4 a.m light bulb moments. To read more about the inspiration for Scribblers, visit our About section here.
For our grand opening we have a variety of interesting fiction writers and poets on our site, and we’ll be posting more great poems and stories in the coming days. We also have author interviews and guest blogs to look forward to, so keep coming back. Better yet, sign up for our RSS feed, follow us on Twitter and join our Facebook fan page.
Thank you to all the roof scribblers who have sent their work. A special thanks to Menachem Persoff of Neve Daniel in Israel who sent the following on the occasion of our launch:
Now someone, clearly very bright
Decided to launch a new Jewish website
He called it, “Scribblers on the Roof”
And that surely is proof
That poets have begun to see the light!
Just to point out that the person who created this is … ahem … a she.
I’d also like to thank everyone who has been promoting our site over the last few weeks prior to the launch. A special thanks to Alan Abbey in Israel, who has drawn contributors from around the holy land, who somehow seem to think that this is in fact his site. The confusion stems from the fact that Alan sent out an email blast with my email to him, which started with the words: “I’m delighted to announce the establishment of Scribblers on the Roof” – or words to that effect. So everyone thought the “I” was Alan. I don’t mind at all. He’s a great guy and I appreciate the efforts. I just feel bad when submissions come in with direct messages to Alan and I feel compelled to pass them on.
Scribblers on the Roof is also here to keep you abreast of what’s happening on other sites that are of interest to our readers. You can link to some amazing authors and resources from Scribblers. In addition, this week over at the Jewish Ledger, there’s a fantastic interview with the incomparable Alice Hoffman and how much her Jewish upbringing has influenced her writing, particularly her latest novel, The Story Sisters. I bet some of you didn’t even know she was Jewish, right? Says Hoffman:
The Jewish part of me is the storytelling part. I think what caused me to be a writer was being a reader, and I was very influenced by fairy tales. But mostly I was influenced by my grandmother, who came from Russia and lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and then in the Bronx. Her stories were for me the beginning of storytelling. It’s interesting that I didn’t even realize that in writing the “The Story Sisters” that it’s really the grandmothers who are the storytellers – the kind of people who are at the heart of everything. That was really true for me with my grandmother; so that’s really where my Jewishness comes from.

I hope you’ll take a look around the site and that you will continue to submit your work. Feel free to send feedback. Your comments and suggestions are most welcome!
