Dear Scribblers,
Two new posts up today, with more coming later this week. November is gearing up to be an exciting month for the site. First up we have a delightfully quirky short story from Vanessa Ryan. To say anything more would be to give it all away. Taking the ride with Vanessa’s protagonist – Abraham Isaac Rothman – in Being Nowhere, is a delight.
There must be something in the water this week because our featured poet – Ken Bresler – also brings a humorous touch to a serious subject in Throne of God. Both Ken and Vanessa’s work should bring a little joy into your reading week.
Speaking of joy, some of us find it in writing stories, others in reading stories, or both. But when the opportunity arises to see those stories performed, then we at Scribblers say run – don’t walk - to see those stories come to life. So, if you happen to be in New York between now and December 13, then it would be nothing short of a travesty to miss out on the indomitable Theodore Bikel performing in his new one-man show, Laughter Through Tears, about the world of Sholom Aleichem (may we all bow at his feet for bringing us beautiful short stories including Tevye the Milkman, which served as the leaping off point for Fiddler on the Roof).
Bikel will perform his show in English and Yiddish at the National Yiddish Theater – Folksbiene in New York through December 13. For more information and tickets visit http://www.laughterthroughtears.org/
Speaking of Sholom Aleichem, this is a great segue into Young Adult books. Why, you may ask? Read on…Over at the Jewish Book Council Blog, Micol Ostow – author of So Punk Rock (and Other Ways to Disappoint your Mother) is guest blogging about how she has no choice but to write Young Adult fiction with heavily Jewish themes. Check out what she has to say and why you can’t take the Sholom Aleichem out of the girl!
And apropos of nothing in particular – but Jewish books in general – if you’re in Palo Alto next Sunday (November 15), then be sure to drop by Etz Chaim’s Arts and Books Fair, and add some more great Jewish reading to your ever growing library. More information is available here.
On a personal note, I’m into week two of NaNoWriMo (what have I let myself in for?). Anyone else who is attempting to complete this marathon of writing a 50,000-word novel in one month, do hang in there. We shall surely emerge punch drunk with some fantastic material (and probably a great deal of rubbish, too), but it will all be worth it in the end.
As usual, keep scribbling.
